The Poetics of Peace:
The Ends of Time, the Roots of Eternity

(Friday Evening, December 14, 2007)

In this dynamic evening mythologist Michael Meade shows that when all sense is lost and all seems headed for destruction, it is "mythic sense" that is missing and mythic imagination that is needed. Not a particular myth, but stories and "earthly wisdom" that reunite culture with great Nature where the pattern of birth, death, and renewal prevails. Rather than the literal call for people to "save the planet," Meade suggests the issue is finding the lost connections to the living Soul of the World and the Tree of Life at the center of all spiritual paths.
The World Behind the World:
Myth and Imagination in Troubled Times

(Saturday, December 15, 2007)
Despite the increasing confusion of modern cultures, the "mythic sense" of life waits to re-enter the world at the "living edges" where spirit and soul meet. Threads of genius and purpose exist in everyone, but only become visible when something creative is attempted and the "mythic sense" awakens within. The unique story woven in the soul of each person wants to be lived out as a great experiment in life. The connections from one's inner nature to the World Behind the World form the sinews that tie a person to the innate sense of purpose and meaning in their life. When acting from this knowing place each person becomes capable of contributing meaning and healing to both culture and nature. Using the dual lenses of myth and depth psychology we will examine the indelible shape of the inner life and meaningful directions of outer work.

The Water of Life: Initiation and the Tempering of the Soul
(Sunday, December 16, 2007)
As the collective sense of unity collapses, the "uniqueness" within individuals becomes more essential as a source of unifying imagination. Initiation is the way the soul grows and finds its unique project in life. Using traditional myths, Meade shows the three steps of initiation: separation, ordeals, and the conscious return to community. Initiation aims at the full incarnation of the soul that requires both ascents and descents, climbing the ladders of wisdom, and descending to the depths of love and healing. Finding and following the threads of one's destiny is shown to involve a pilgrimage to the center of the Self where the dream of life speaks in mythical tones.
Program Leader:

Michael Meade is a masterful storyteller with a genius for metaphorical thinking and gleaning ideas from years of working with youth and communities at-risk. His language rings with echoes of truth and "sings with an incantational voice that takes you right to the edge of elemental knowledge." In addition to his book, The Water of Life: Initiation and the Tempering of the Soul, Michael has several audio productions including: Initiation and the Soul: The Sacred and the Profane and Holding the Thread of Life: The Human Response to the Unraveling of the World. Michael is the Founder/Director of Mosaic Multicultural Foundation, an organization that seeks to create cross-cultural alliances, mentoring relationships and social connections built upon personal trust and commitment to bridging unhealthy divisions in contemporary communities. Michael’s work with Mosaic focuses on youth at risk, 'genius based' mentoring, and developing the 'arts of community' in diverse organizations and groups.
